Thank G-d summer is around and now is the time that We are flooded with calls concerning the kosher status of the Kona Ice trucks.
Whole Kosher in no way certifies any of the trucks while many of these trucks profess to be kosher showing our kosher certificate. This in no way assures that the truck is kosher certified.
We do certify the Kona ice syrups but of course cannot guarantee that this syrup is indeed in the truck machinery. Our kosher letters only apply to the un-opened syrup that is listed on the letter of certification, and not necessarily to the truck itself. The truck operators are not under any contract to only use the syrups that Kona provides.
Merely asking the truck attendant if an item is kosher is not sufficient, as they may not be aware of specific requirements that may affect the kosher status of an item. One must see the actual syrup product in its original sealed container and be able to ascertain that the product in the container or machine is the same that you saw in the original factory plastic bottle.
In the case where one were to observe unopened bottles on the truck and if one can reasonably assume that this is what he is using in the equipment one should consult with their local Rav.
Once again, we only certify the syrups. The company name that provides the syrups are “Kreations” and Must bear a kosher symbol.
All but six flavors are parve as stated on the kosher certificate. The six dairy ones are listed as follows and have their own separate kosher certification.
The dairy flavors are:
Red Velvet
Caramel
Buttered Beer
Mango Jalapeno
Caribbean Mountain Coffee
Sour berry blast
